The Crackdown on Unlicensed and Illegal Nursing Homes in California
Unfortunately, there is more than one case of severe neglect in illegal facilities hitting the news. Another story reports eight individuals have been arrested in connection to healthcare fraud, some of whom were reportedly owners of hospices. These arrests come as a result of the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud’s work. These individuals stole $50 million from the nation’s taxpayers.
Additionally, as reported in March by the state of California, Governor Newsom’s crackdown on unlicensed facilities and fraud has yielded satisfying results over the past few years. According to the article, “over 280 hospice licenses have been revoked over the past two years, an additional 300 providers are under investigation, and 284 criminals have been arrested”.
Clearly, there is more work to do. Especially in light of this article from the beginning of March 2026. Unfortunately, these frauds and abuses don’t just hurt the taxpayer, they hurt residents in irreversible ways.

Covered by Karla Rendon and Mekahlo Medina at NBC 4 Los Angeles, this case reports that a couple was allegedly running illegal nursing homes in Carson and Torrance. The couple faces charges of elder abuse and fraud.
Reportedly, 10 total residents were rescued after suffering malnourishment and neglect, even being denied essential medical care. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department served warrants in February after reports of unlicensed care.
Those rescued were placed in proper care facilities and are being treated for their injuries and health concerns.
Malnutrition and Abuse Statistics
