One of the best protections we have against negligent nursing homes is issued violations. Surveyors and professionals in the state licensing departments wield the power to suspend a facility’s license and issue violations that could stop services in their tracks. Though unfortunate for residents, especially if the facility must close, these violations and license suspensions are built to ultimately protect them. In June, it was announced that seven Southern Californian nursing homes face license suspension after multiple violations.
AA Violation
Among the state’s most serious violations is the AA violation. This is issued to a facility that has, through failures, contributed significantly to the death of patients. Recently, it was revealed that seven nursing homes in the Los Angeles area had received two AA violations in the past two years, elevating the situation to suspending the licenses of all of those facilities – including Ararat Nursing Facility, Antelope Valley Care Center in Lancaster, Brier Oak on Sunset in Hollywood, Golden Haven Care Center in Glendale, and others.

Nursing Homes Face License Suspension
Mark E. Reagan, the attorney for Ararat, claims the suspension is not warranted. However, the AA violation, one of the rarest violations, has been issued to each of these seven facilities twice in the past two years.
This violation is issued by the California Department of Health after investigations that prove there was negligence on the side of the nursing home. From withholding diabetic insulin to falls that should have been prevented, it was found that each facility was guilty of some degree of negligence that directly contributed to a patient’s death.
As a result, the facilities were given 30 days’ notice to appeal before their license would be suspended. It is expected that all facilities will appeal.
