9 Local Resources for LA Senior Citizens

If you’re 65 or older and looking into long-term care living, ready to enjoy retirement, then maintaining your independence and getting the help you need is probably your top priority. Luckily, there are a ton of resources out there for anyone looking for extra help and guidance. From non-medical care to Dementia care, to disaster preparedness, the LA community offers programs and services that help keep you in the know and well cared for.

Caregivers

Caregivers serves elderly individuals who are homebound or struggling to keep up with daily tasks. By pairing volunteers with seniors, Caregivers provides vital, non-medical help, companionship, and community that allows seniors to stay comfortably at home. They are always looking for volunteers, and are a fantastic option for anyone hoping to age in place.

Helping Hands Senior Foundation

Helping Hands Senior Foundation was started with the goal of providing assistance for anyone planning or searching for care services. Addressing the needs of individuals of any income and with any health condition, Helping Hands Senior Foundation offers care coordination, placement assistance, and a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Loan Closet.

Catholic Charities Asylee Services

The local LA chapter of Catholic Charities offers assistance to anyone who has filed for, or is a recipient of, a T-visa, U-visa, SIJs, or is a noncitizen and a victim of human trafficking or domestic violence. Their free case management services cover benefits applications, cultural orientation, English tutoring and resources, employment training and job placement, and more.

West San Fernando County Disaster Preparedness

The 2023 West San Fernando County Disaster Preparedness Fair will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the Westfield Topanga Community Center. This event will feature appearances from the American Red Cross, Community Emergency Response Team, local firefighters and first responders, and more. This is a great opportunity to gather information on how best to prepare for any disaster and emergency.

Senior Helpers

Senior Helpers is an organization that offers comprehensive in-home care for local seniors. Programs offered include Dementia & Alzheimer’s care, companion care, Parkinson’s care, chronic disease care, respite care, wellness watch, end-of-life support care, and more. Through their services they’re able to relieve the stress of family and friends caring for an ill loved one.

Rides & Smiles by JFS

The Jewish Family Service Rides & Smiles program is a volunteer transportation program that assists seniors. Their ride services will take you to medical appointments, personal errands, social events, and more. They serve a large range of ZIP codes in the San Diego area, making them the largest volunteer transportation service in San Diego.

Perfect for Auntie

Perfect for Auntie is a placement agency that works with seniors and their families to find the assisted and long-term care community that is right for them. Their goal is to make the process as painless as possible and to find an assisted living arrangement that is comfortable and provides all the social engagements and activities that you’ll love.

Go Orange Transportation Program

The Go Orange Transportation program serves active seniors in the Orange County area. They offer inexpensive transportation vouchers for rides to medical appointments, outings, errands, and more. To register, simply fill out an application. From there you’ll be able to purchase voucher booklets at the Orange County Senior Center and not have to worry about driving!
