One of the most forgotten social classes deserves so much more. Older Americans are not just retirees, they are our grandparents, neighbors, aunts, and uncles. As the older generations, they can be credited with helping to build our communities and, more importantly, the foundations of our families. Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) celebrates older Americans with Older Americans Month. Help us flip the script and honor our patriarchs and matriarchs this month!
Flip the Script
Every year a theme is chosen for Older American Month (OAM). In 2025 the theme is Flip the Script. This theme challenges us all to rethink stereotypes and misconceptions of the elderly in our communities. They are not burdens to be hidden away in nursing homes, but rather amazing people who deserve dignity, quality care, connection, and so much more in retirement and beyond.
The words we use shape our perceptions. This Older Americans Month, we’re sharing ways to rethink how we talk about aging. Instead of “She still drives,” simply say, “She drives.” Phrases like “still” often reinforce ageist assumptions. Small shifts like this can make a big impact. #FlipTheScriptOnAging

Show your support for older Americans this month in simple ways. Here are some easy ways to celebrate and get involved.
Volunteer. Your time is a gift to those living in long-term care facilities and retirement communities. Make valuable connections, help with daily activities, or just be a listening ear to residents.
Help tell stories. Talk to older relatives or neighbors, hear their stories, and ask if you can write it all down and share it online. Or, invite your older relatives, neighbors, and friends over for an afternoon or evening of socializing. Plan games, a good meal, and plenty of time for them to swap stories.
Plan an event. The ACL offers help in planning a special OAM event. Visit their site and get the resources to plan your own day of activities.
Post on social media. Though this seems like a small, and maybe unimportant, action, it can truly make waves. There is so much information out there that is unknown to the majority of Americans. Sharing valuable information, facts, and other information can inspire someone else to volunteer or advocate.
America’s older citizens have worked hard and made huge contributions to our communities. It’s time we give back by acknowledging them, listening to them, sharing their stories, and advocating for quality of life across all ages!
