Every year there are some key moments where we take time to truly focus on residents and their rights. Long-term care and nursing homes residents are often overlooked members of society. But they are our grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends and they have a right to independence, quality care, and self-determination. This fact, and the individuals themselves, can get lost in the policy and legislation of it all, which is why The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care set aside a whole month. Every October, we celebrate Residents’ Rights Month.
Residents’ Rights Month
Established in 1981, Residents’ Rights Week has been celebrated every year, and in 2011 it was expanded to Residents’ Rights Month. Throughout the month industry professionals, ombudsmen, community leaders, and advocates have the chance to host special events, webinars, and more to not only celebrate the residents, but spread awareness about current issues.
A key to preventing abuse is knowing your rights, which is the ultimate purpose of this month. Awareness and knowledge are power. The rights most often forgotten are:
- Right to a Dignified Existence
- Right to Self-Determination
- Right to be Fully Informed
- Right to Raise Grievances
- Rights Regarding Access
- Rights Regarding Financial Affairs
- Right to Privacy
- Rights During Discharge and Transfer
Caregivers and residents alike should know this list and be empowered to stand up for any resident whose rights are being infringed. Additionally, laws and policies should uphold these rights and make it easier for facilities to not only accommodate all residents with quality care, but be held accountable when they don’t.
Stand With Me
This year’s theme is Stand With Me. The idea is that we speak up for those who do not have a voice. We let others stand with us for a more united front and larger voice to advocate. Solidarity and support are vital in uplifting residents and ensuring their rights are preserved.
