3 Resources to Help You Choose A Nursing Home

Protecting yourself and loved ones often starts with knowledge and resources. Preventing abuse starts with using knowledge and resources available to carefully analyze your options and make informed choices. That’s why we are passionate about sharing valuable resources so they are easy to find and you can feel confident as you age. Here are three resources to help you choose a nursing home.

CANHR Nursing Home Evaluation Checklist

Probably the best resource is the CANHR Nursing Home Evaluation Checklist. As you and your loved ones investigate nursing homes and weigh your options, this checklist ensures you are paying attention to important aspects. For example, this checklist has requirements for staff, resident care, rooms, facility environment, kitchen and dining areas, and more. With the checklist, nothing will escape your observations and it’s easier to compare and contrast different homes. Access the checklist here

Loneliness & Isolation Fact Sheet

The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care and the National Center on Elder Abuse teamed up to create a fact sheet on loneliness and isolation. It is reported that half of nursing home residents feel and experience loneliness and isolation—a problem made worse by COVID and potentially never addressed. The fact sheet includes tips on how both family and staff can ensure residents do not feel lonely or experience harsh isolation that can lead to other health issues. Read more here

Guide for Preventing Abuse

Abuse prevention starts with all of us. Anyone who visits nursing homes can report abuse and neglect. Anyone passionate about creating better living environments for the elderly can speak up and advocate on their behalf. California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) has a wonderful guide for preventing abuse that is worth reading and keeping on hand. Among their many suggestions is the advice to make visits count, getting to know the staff, and acting as an advocate. Read the full guide here
